Today’s Wordle answer (game #1510) is… CORAL.
Another easy one today, so maybe we will be able to erase the trauma of Wordle’s hardest month ever from our minds after all.
CORAL has no real complications beyond the fact that there are a few similarly spelled words, and people are duly solving it in an average of 3.6 guesses.
MORAL and CAROL are the most obvious of those alternative words, although a fair few people did go for POLAR and MOLAR too. But we’re not exactly in -OUND territory here, and I’d be amazed if any regular Wordlers lost their streak today.
Mine was certainly never in doubt, despite my opening MANGY leaving 406 possible solutions. I did need a big helping of luck in order to beat the average, though.
My second guess, STARE was a “terrific choice” according to WordleBot, which is probably giving me too much credit considering it was also an incredibly obvious word to play next. But it was not particularly lucky and still left 20 words.
I was probably staring down the barrel of another four, then, but drew up a list of nine options: RIVAL, RURAL, BRIAR, CROAK, CORAL, VIRAL, BORAX, POLAR and VICAR.
BORAX was the only one of those that I knew had been a past Wordle answer, though a subsequent look after the game revealed that RIVAL, BRIAR, CROAK, VIRAL and POLAR have all appeared too, the latter as recently as May this year. Then again, the chances of me remembering a single nondescript Wordle answer from three months ago is about as high as that of me winning an Olympic medal in high jump.
I missed a bunch of possibles, including AURAL, FRIAR, BROAD, ACRID, ARROW and CIRCA – all of which should probably have made it into my list too – and that skewed my choice of third word slightly.
CORAL was a good bet among the words I had, in that would definitely rule in/out each of them – but it wasn’t so helpful with the words I’d missed, and in reality might have left me a three-way choice between AURAL, RURAL and VIRAL, ARDOR, ABHOR and ARBOR, or FRIAR, BRIAR and FUBAR (really, WordleBot?)
If either of those scenarios had played out, I might still have ended up with a five today. But instead, my narrowing-down word proved to be the solution, so I ended up with an unexpected and entirely underserved three.
Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1509)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1509, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was G.
G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an R to make GR— or an L to make GL—, but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was N.
N is a pretty common ending letter in Wordle: it’s the seventh most likely in that position and features in 130 solutions.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1509) was… GROAN.
I was beginning to forget what it was like to play an easy Wordle, but here’s GROAN to make us forget the fact that July was the toughest month in Wordle history.
At the time of writing it has an average score of 3.4, making it the easiest since PLAIN in late June and one of the 20th simplest games of 2025 so far.
What are the factors that make it so solvable? Well, a lot will have depended on your start word; there’s no such thing as an easy Wordle for everyone. But this one will have been a cinch for anyone who began with CRANE, at least, because that left only five possible solutions.
For everyone else, it’s simply the fact that it contains four very common letters, plus one, G, that’s very common at the start.
In fact, GR as an opening combination begins 38 of Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions, making it the sixth most likely pairing at the start after ST, SH, CR, SP and CH.
I had to settle for a four, annoyingly, but that was almost entirely due to my randomly chosen opener FILMY being entirely useless. I say it was useless; in reality, it still cut down the options to just over 1,000 – so I guess it had some value. But not a lot.
I went with SANER next, because that’s now my go-to second guess if I haven’t yet played E or R and don’t have any letters to work with. That gave me three yellows and cut the shortlist to 18.
I didn’t know that at the time, of course – but I did find 10 myself: GRAND, BRAND, DRANK, CRANK, GROAN, ROUND, PRANG, GRANT, BRAWN and PRAWN. The ones I missed ranged from obvious (DRAWN, PRANK) to a lot less so (ACORN, URBAN). On reflection, I should really have found at least 14 of them though.
Still, it didn’t harm my game too much. I worked out that GRAND would be my ideal third guess, because it would place all three of my yellows in their most common positions for -RAN-. That was the format for six of my 10 possible answers (and a few more of WordleBot’s extended list) and it was indeed the exact same word the ‘Bot would have chosen.
GRANT turned the first two letters green but left the A and N yellow, and ruled out the D. That in turn meant that GROAN was the only possible solution, meaning I scored a satisfactory four given that first guess.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2022 and is still going strong in 2025.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Games app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
12. The NYT has added in some of its own words, that weren’t in that list of 2,309 solutions. More will undoubtedly come over the next few years.
